Last week I read Family Feasts for $75 a Week by Mary Ostyn. (You can check out her blog Owlhaven for more information about her.) The book is part how-to guide to frugal shopping and cooking and part cookbook. The first four chapters deal with menu planning, getting the best price on groceries, and cooking from scratch. Since the I read a lot of frugal blogs, the information wasn't new, but it inspired me to try a few new things including checking out the prices at other grocery stores. In the six months we've lived here, I've done all my grocery shopping at Wal-Mart, four miles down the road. Driving another 10 miles takes me to a larger town the has numerous grocery stores. I hadn't been in any of them. Thursday when the sale flyers came in the mail, I chose one that had been interesting me and decided to shop there this morning.
It was a bit of a bust. The sale prices were great. The problem was that the regular prices weren't comparable to Wal-Mart. While I saved $1 on each bottle of vegetable oil I bought, the price of bacon was $2 more a package and a block of cheese $1 more. I ended up buying 16 sale priced items and then headed to my usual Wal-Mart. I know that some people shop at several stores and get the best prices at each store. I'm not sure if I'm willing to spend the time to do that.
Last week I got a head cold and ended up not making the potato soup in homemade bread bowls. I just didn't feel up for a major project. Supposedly another cold front is going to come through this month so I'll save that for a cold, icky day.
This week I'm cooking:
Monday: Mexican Chicken Pasta Skillet.
Tuesday: Chicken and Sausage Jambalaya, salad, garlic bread.
Wednesday: Dinner at church.
Thursday: Meatloaf, mashed potatoes, corn, rolls.
Friday: Chili Cheese fries. (Man food while I'm attending a women's conference at church.)
Saturday: Homemade Pizza.
Sunday: Grilled cheese and tomato soup or leftovers.
Sunday lunch: Crockpot roast, rice, green beans, rolls.
I plan six quick lunches (Monday-Saturday) each week but don't designate a day. This week I tried shopping for two weeks so I have 12 lunch ideas:
Tuna-Macaroni casserole (carryover from last week)
Tacos
Frozen pizza
Baked Chimichanga (recipe from Ostyn book)
Ham Poboys
Easy Pizza rolls (recipe from Ostyn book)
Shrimp Poboys
Chicken Fried Rice
Sloppy Joes or BBQ sandwiches if meat leftover from Sunday roast
Hamburgers
Hamburger Rice Skillet
